ChalkMine Quarry exploits a partially altered hard fine olivine basalt. This resource is unique in that it was created by lava flowing into a fresh water crater lake in which an underlying diatomaceous earth deposit had already been laid down within the crater of an older basalt intrusion.

aggregate

ChalkMine produces aggregate products from its crushed (Mobile Jaw Crusher) > 50 mm screened fresh basalt. As the basalt reacted with water in a crater lake there was a high degree of fracturing and jointing and this has resulted in high angularity and the production of a large number of flat faces in the coarser end products. This combined angularity and the presence of flat faces produces high quality mattress, gabion rock and rip-rap armour rock.

road base

The company also crushes its .>50 mm rock to finer aggregates to mix with fine palagonite to produce 2.3 roadbases or crushes its >25 mm < 50 mm rock product to make a blue metal crusher dust that it then mixes with crushed aggregate to make 2.1 roadbases. It also produces both 10 and 20 mm aggregate for use as drainage products. Because of other quarry competition and the isolated location of Junction View it was felt that we couldn't compete for the TMR Certified and registered coated aggregate and concrete aggregate markets. This may change in due coarse.
