Gabion Rock (>100 mm <200 mm)

gabion-rock.jpg

Fresh basalt derived from Jaw Crusher oversize (> 50 mm) rescreened to (>100 mm < 200 mm). The faces presented in this product make it excellent for placing in gabeon cages.

Angular rock is the best gabion fill as it provides a good interlock and therefore less deformation of the face occurs. This it the type of rock supplied by Mt Sylvia not rounded river rock as offered by others. Rounded river rock used as gabion fill will require much heaver gabion baskets to avoid deformmation under load.

Alan Robertson, Principal of Ausrocks, an engineering consultancy company based in Brisbane has been developing a concept where fork pockets are to be incorporated in the design of the gabion cage  to assist with handling empty gabions and gabions that are pre-filled and transported to site.

The concept is aimed at speeding the actual installation of gabions, particularly in applications where it is not convenient to fill the gabions in situ e.g. where there is restricted access. A forklift, telescopic handler or crane with a fork attachment can be used for handling the gabions.

Filling the Gabions away from the area where the gabion wall is being built can allow the use of equipment to fill the gabions quickly and without spillage in something approaching an assembly line operation.

Trials have been done with basalt from the ChalkMine Quarry and have included hard facing basalt for decorative applications.

Ausrocks has an arrangement with ChalkMine to supply gabions and gabion material - either separately or as a fabricated gabion. Currently further development work is being done to optimise the fork pocket structure as a one-piece unit before the product is released to the market.
